Abstract
A composition comprising carbon and heat-refractory material such as baddeleyite, zirconium oxide, silicon carbide, titanium oxide or carbide, rutile, magnesium oxide, fused magnesia, thorium oxide, corundum or aluminium oxide is protected against deleterious effects of high temperature by mixing therewith a solution of a salt of a high-melting-point metal or of boron and heating the mixture to a sufficiently high temperature-e.g. 1000-1200 DEG C.- to convert the salt to an oxide or carbide. Salts of tungsten, zirconium, boron and manganese-e.g. a 15 per cent solution of tungsten or magnesium nitrate in alcohol may be used. When a boron salt solution is used, boron carbide is formed. The mixing may be performed in vacuo. The mixture of refractory, carbon, and oxide or carbide may be compacted with a binder-e.g. aluminium or magnesium silicate, bentonite or aluminous cements. The carbon may be deposited in situ in the heat-refractory material by heating the latter, immersed in oil, in a closed chamber. U.S.A. Specification 1,947,692 is referred to.
