Abstract

A porous refractory lining or a binder for refractory bricks for a metal melting-pot for use in the extraction of metals by reduction with aluminium, silicon, or magnesium, is prepared by temporarily binding a powdered refractory, such as dead-burned magnesite and/or dolomite, with or without the addition of partly-burned components, corundum, or silicon carbide, with water to which may be added other materials capable of generating a gas on heating, e.g. a carbonate, so that, when the reaction is started in the pot, the binder is evaporated or decomposed and renders the lining porous, the surface pores being then filled by the slag resulting from the reaction. The gas generated must not be in such great amount as to cause strains in the lining. According to an example, to 100 parts of a ramming mixture consisting chiefly of dead-burned magnesite are added 10 parts of a 5 per cent sodium carbonate solution, and the mixture is applied as a lining to a metal pot and dried until the water-content is about 0.5 per cent; a reaction is then started in the pot.
