Abstract
A refractory mix comprises by weight 1-10% of substantially pure silica, the whole or part of which is volatilized silica providing that at least 1% of the mix is volatilized silica, the remainder of the silica (if any) being crystalline silica, 5-25% of - 8+30 Tyler mesh silicon carbide or 5-10% of -100 mesh zircon, not more than 1.3% of iron oxide, the balance of the mix being alumina and/or an aluminium ore containing at least 50% alumina. Potters flint is the specified source of crystalline silica. Water and a temporary binder, e.g. sulphite waste liquor, may be added to the mix before firing as a brick or rammed or gunned refractory monolith. A fine crystalline bond of mullite is stated to be formed. Specification 960,384 is referred to.
