Abstract

A fired refractory shape is made from a composition consisting of 50-70% silicon carbide (partially replaceable by zircon, not greater than 2 parts zircon to 1 part silicon carbide by weight), the remainder being alumina and silica, at least part of the latter being volatilized silica. The SiO2 to Al2O3 ratio is preferably 10/90-40/60 the best ratio being stated to be 71.8 Al2O3 to 28.2 SiO2, which is the ratio in mullite. Some of the Al2O3 and SiO2 may preferably be present in the form of calcined flint clay. A modification of the compositions of the invention comprises 5-15% finely divided SiO2, at least some of which is volatilized SiO2, 25-50% silicon carbide with possible zircon replacement as before, the balance being alumina and silica, the ratio Al2O3 to SiO2 in the mix being 90 to 10. Here the SiO2 which is not volatilized SiO2 is preferably potter's flint.ALSO:A fired refractory shape is made from a composition consisting of silicon carbide 50-70% (partially replaceable by zircon (ZrO.SiO2) not greater than 2 parts zircon to 1 part silicon carbide by weight), the remainder being alumina and silica, at least part of the latter being volatilized silica. The silicon carbide is all of a particle size finer than 4 mesh (U.S. standard screen) a major proportion being finer than 8 mesh but coarser than 48 mesh. The silica to alumina ratio is preferably 10/90-40/60, the best ratio being stated to be 71.8 Al2O3 to 28.2 SiO2, which is the ratio in mullite. Some of the Al2O3 and SiO2 may preferably be present in the form of calcined flint clay. A modification of the compositions of the invention comprises 5-15% of finely divided silica, at least part of which is volatilized silica, 25-50% of silicon carbide with size restrictions as before, optional zircon replacements as before, the balance being alumina and silica, the ratio of alumina to silica in the mix being 90 : 10. Here the silica which is not volatilized silica is preferably polters flint.
