Abstract

A high alumina refractory of increased strength, abrasion resistance and lower porosity contains 50 to 90% by weight Al2O3, 1-10% volatilized silica of particle size less than 50 microns more than half being finer than 10 microns, 0 to 10% Potter's Flint, the remainder if any being natural constituents of the ores used to provide the Al2O3 content. The Al2O3 may be derived from calcined or tabular alumina, calcined Burley Diaspore, calcined Alabama bauxite, calcined South American bauxite, ball clay, fused alumina, fused mullite and fused bauxite, proportioned to give the desired Al2O3 content in the refractory produced. Examples are given containing 50%, 72%, 85% and 90% Al2O3. The volatilized silica may be derived by depositing silica in the vapour phase e.g. in the reduction of silica to form silicon alloys, or reducing quartz with carbon treating the resulting vapour with an oxygen yielding gas and condensing the silica. The high alumina materials are ground, screened and blended, 1-10% volatilized silica is added to the batch, a temporary binder (e.g. sulphite liquor) is added, the batch tempered with water, pressed into the desired shape, dried and fired. In certain examples Potter's Flint is used to adjust the Al2O3 content.
