Abstract

For the production of refractory ceramic insulating bricks, a blend of Portland cement, expanded perlite, sand from a magmatic rock containing feldspar and/or feldspatoids, and water are formed to give a blank which is then fired in such a way that closed pores with a vitrified outer skin are formed from the perlite grains. The strength properties are comparable to those of bricks produced with the use of fused alumina cement and are essentially retained between 600 and 1100 DEG C. In addition, only slight shrinkage of less than 1 % occurs.
