Abstract

526,414. Refractory materials. P. B. SILLIMANITE CO., Ltd., LUCAS, A. R., and WAGNER, W. G. Feb. 10, 1939, No. 4395. [Class 22] Porous firebricks and furnace settings are rendered non-porous by coating first with a thin layer of a finely-divided refractory material and a fluxing or fritting agent and then with a thicker layer of a refractory material in a state of subdivision to yield a porous coating. The refractory material may be sillimanite, mullite or other aluminium silicate, alundum, chromite, magnesite, silica, ganister &c. Sodium silicate may be used as a flux, and clay may be added. In the first coating the refractory material is such that a proportion passes a 200 mesh sieve and is retained on a 300 mesh sieve and of the remainder at least 75 per cent. passes a 150 mesh sieve. In the second coating, 40 per cent. passes a 100 mesh sieve and the remainder contains coarser particles retained on a 60 mesh sieve.
