Abstract
A fired ceramic comprises a sintered matrix of fine crystals of refractory and 10 to 40 per cent by volume of a coarse additive embedded in the matrix, the ceramic being free of glass or a reaction product of the matrix with the additive. Specified for both the matrix and additive are alumina, fused silica, mullite, stabilized zirconia, molochite, and cyanite, singly or in admixture. Preferably the matrix material all passes 300 B.S.S., whilst the coarse additive varies between 22 and 300 B.S.S. Specifications 632,247 and 716,894 are referred to.
