A fired magnesia brick contains 1-8%, based on the weight of magnesia, of alumina and less than 1% Fe 2 O 3 , has a lime/silica ratio from 1À65: 1 to 2À50: 1 by weight and is composed of more than 50 wt. per cent coarse-grained magnesia having a particle size of at least 0À3 mm. and having a lime/silica ratio of 1À70:1 to 5À0:1, less than 50% fine-grained magnesia having a particle size of at most 0À2 mm., and at least 2% of fine-grained magnesia having a lime/silica ratio below 1, the coarse-grained magnesia and the total fine-grained magnesia containing less than 1% Fe 2 O 3 . The bricks are pressed from a mix containing magnesia particles, 1-8% alumina particles, e.g. corundum or fused corundum of below 4 mm., and a binder such as tar, pitch, bitumen or a pitch produced by the evaporation of sulphite liquor. When the alumina is below 0À12 mm., 1-10%, based on the weight of magnesia, of sodium metaphosphate or dicalcium phosphate can be added to prevent the #-# transformation of dicalcium silicate. The magnesia grains used can be either sintered or fused.
