Abstract

A bonded silica brick is made by firing a pressed mixture consisting of substantially pure silica, a permanent bonding agent such as Ca(OH)2, Mg(OH)2 or hydrated dolomite, a temperary binder such as sulphite lye or molasses with 0,7% to 10,5% finely divided silicon and 1% to 5% by weight of an ammonium compound such as the chloride, sulphate, nitrate or diethylamine. The silicon may be added as free silicon, silicon carbide, ferro silicon or combinations of these and the silica is added as quartzite. Water is added to the mixture to give the desired consistency and after drying and firing a dense bonded silica brick is produced. If a ferro silicon addition is made the ferro silicon should have a silicon content of 80%-90% so that the iron content of the fired brick is no higher than 0,6%.
