Abstract

A refractory substance for use particularly in contact with molten magnesium comprises crystalline zirconia, magnesia, magnesium spinel, and an amorphous matrix constituted mainly by the impurities in the composition, the zirconia forming 10-47 per cent and the magnesia 15-60 per cent by weight. Silica should be less than 10 per cent and the alumina more than 5 per cent by weight and the ratio of magnesia to alumina should be greater than 0.4. Examples of suitable compositions are given.
