Abstract

The lining element of a ball mill has at least the inner wearing portion made from a solidified casting obtained by fusing and casting a mixture containing from 85-98 per cent of aluminous material composed predominately of alumina, the remainder being glass. Finely ground sodalime or borosilicate glass is added to comminuted pure alumina or aluminous material containing 54-98 per cent Al2O3, such as bauxite, gibbsite, diaspore, laterite, corundum or emery, the mixture fused preferably in an electric furnace, e.g. as described in U.S.A. Specification 929,517, and the molten material run into a mould, which may be insulated and preheated to form linings or lining blocks, the latter being cemented in position. The castings produced show on fracture a feather-like structure with elongated crystals with their major axes approximately perpendicular to the face of the casting. U.S.A.
