A refractory material having the composition by weight expressed as oxides, of 60-73À2% Al 2 O 3 , 16-22% SiO 2 , 10-20% ZrO 2 , and 0À8 to 1À3% Na 2 O and containing the phases corundum 35-49 wt. per cent, mullite 30-44%, baddeleyite 10-20% and vitreous phase 11- 14% is made by melting bauxite, siliceous sand, zirconium sand and sodium carbonate in an electric furnace.
