Abstract

A refractory core, with or without a mould integral with the core, is prepared by firing to a temperature below the fusion a shape formed from zirconium oxide or silicate together with one or more oxides or oxide precursors of Group IIa metals, e.g. calcium, barium and strontium carbonates and/or one or more other refractory oxides or precursors thereof, the zirconium expressed as the oxide forming 15-95 mol per cent of the mixture of the zirconium compound and Group IIa metal oxide, the other refractory compounds forming 1-95% by weight of the mixture. Refractory compounds specified are alumina, titania, silica, magnesia, mullite, molochite, sillimanite, plaster of Paris and ground siliceous or aluminous porcelain. A temporary binder, e.g. wax or synthetic resin, may be employed in forming the shape.
