Abstract

1,058,615. Ceramic bodies. C. A. KUMPEN. Jan. 30, 1964 [Nov. 19, 1963], No. 4007/64. Heading C1J. Ceramic bodies are prepared by mixing fly ash with a minor proportion of one or more mineral binders with or without fillers, shaping and firing to a temperature at least equal to that at which the fly ash or mixture becomes plastic, the fly ash containing not more than 12% of combustible material and having the composition 44-51% SiO 2 , 20-29% Al 2 O 3 + TiO 2 , 5-8%.Fe 2 O 3 , 5-8% CaO, 1-2% MgO. 4-7- 0 % K 2 O + Na 2 O and 3-8À5% ignition loss. Binders specified are bentonite, pseudobentonite, fuller's earth, montmorillonite and tar. Fillers specified are -peat, sawdust and urea or phenol-formaldehyde resins. Fluxes may also be added. Bodies of up to 50% porosity may be obtained.
