Abstract
Dense refractories are prepared by firing at 1250-1400 DEG C. a mixture of an argillaceous binder, e.g. clay and more than 20% of beryl either above or mixed with at least one of beryllium oxide, a beryllium salt or a material containing at least one such beryllium compound, the total proportion of beryllium compounds being at most 90% by weight calculated as beryl. The composition may also contain 0.5-3% MgO either as such or in combined form e.g. talcum, and up to 1% of Li2O in combined form, e.g. spodumene or petalite.
