Abstract

In a gas burner assembly (see Division F4), the multiport refractory ceramic feed, combustion and radiation plates are formed, as described in Specification 931,096, of zircon mullite or alumina, thoria, zirconia, bonded silicon carbide, cordierite or magnesia, with or without fillers or insulating ingredients. The zircon mullite composition is: 67.54% zirconium silicate, 27.06% aluminium silicate, 4.05% mullite fibres, and 1.35% glass fibres. The plates comprise either corrugated sheets sintered together at their apices, or alternate flat and corrugated sheets sintered together; the flat and corrugated sheets being formed from a plasticized mixture containing sinterable particles, organic polymeric resins and volatile liquids, by knife casting, spraying, casting or calendering. The sheets are temporarily bonded into a plate by using volatile liquids to soften contact areas, the sheets being then sawed to shape and sintered. The plates are mounted in a housing comprising refractory bricks having a composition: 71% Al2O3, 27% SiO2, 1% TiO2 and 1% iron oxide. A refractory cement is used having a composition: 80% alumina, 15-20% calcium aluminate and up to 5% of kaolin clay.
