Abstract
1376991 Refractories L'ELECTRO-REFRACTAIRE SA 7 Jan 1972 [8 Jan 1971] 867/72 Heading C1J A dry heterogeneous refractory composition comprises (1) 30-90 wt. per cent of chamotte or grog (>100Á) and (2) 10-70 wt. per cent of a fine part (<100Á) comprising 0-70 wt. per cent corundum or alumina and 30-100 wt. per cent of a substance or mixture comprising at least 70 wt. per cent zirconia, said fine part having a silica content (if any) less than 30% of its zirconia content. The particle size of the fine part maybe < 40Á. The compositions may be moulded or slip coil, using morganic, organic or chemically-acting binders, and fired above 1550‹ C. to form an agglomerate in which chamotte particles are bound by a porous shard consisting of ZrO 2 ŒAl 2 O 3 crystals with a small proportion of vitreous phase and mullite. The compositions may be mixed with benders and water, to form plastic manes, puddles, grouts or cements. The moulded products or fluid compositions are used where resistance to corrosion is required, e.g. the glass- and steel-making furnaces. The nature of the chamotte or grog is varied in accordance with the characteristics required of the refractory. Thus high corrosion resistance is provided by a dense electro-fused or sintered material of the Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 -ZrO 2 system; resistance to thermic variation by, e.g. tabular alumina, fibrolite or fired kyanite, and insulating properties by hollow spheres. A grouting composition will have a high proportion of fine part and chamotte of <0À5 mm. size. A composition for high pressure moulding will have a low proportion of fine part.
