Abstract

Cristobalite in powder form, which may be used in refractory cements, articles, or puddle-work, is obtained by melting a pure siliceous material assaying 99.8 per cent silica, e.g. Fontainebleu sand, with 0.1 per cent or less of an oxide of an alkali or alkaline earth metal, or an equivalent proportion of a salt of such metal capable of conversion to the oxide, e.g. sodium carbonate, and cooling the resulting molten mass slowly.
