Abstract
Alumina may be extracted by known methods from slags, the constituents of which fall within the boundaries of a polygon in the ternary CaO-SiO2-Al2O3 diagram limited by the following lines: (a) line joining the binary compound SiO2.2CaO and the binary compound Al2O3.CaO; (b) line of composition 15 per cent Al2O3; (c) line of composition 48 per cent CaO; (d) line of composition 12 per cent SiO2; (e) line of composition 68 per cent CaO.ALSO:The constituents of slag in the manufacture of cast iron are in such proportion that they fall within the boundaries of a polygon in the ternary CaO-SiO2-A2lO3 diagram limited by the following lines: (a) line joining the binary compound SiO2-2 CaO and the binary compound Al2O3 CaO; (b) line of composition 15 per cent Al2O3; (c) line of composition 48 per cent CaO; (d) line of composition 12 per cent SiO2; (e) line of composition 68 per cent CaO. A preferred composition is one falling within the polygon: (a) line joining the binary compound SiO2 2CaO and the binary compound Al2O3-CaO; (b) lines of composition 48 and 58 per cent CaO; (c) lines of composition 12 and 25 per cent SiO2. The slags may be quenched in air or water and used for their hydraulic properties or cooled slowly and the alumina, which is mostly in a soluble state, extracted by known processes.
