Abstract

Lime, and when necessary, alumina-bearing ores, e.g. bauxite, are added to a blast furnace charge, or to the molten slag issuing from the furnace, so that the slag, preferably after slow cooling, has a composition within the limits (a) x(SiO2.2CaO) + y(Al2O3.1 to 2 CaO) and (b) Al2O3=12-37 per cent, SiO2=12-28 per cent, CaO=49.5-62 per cent, the alumina being thereupon extracted. Preferably, the composition should also be in the zone bounded, in the CaO-SiO2-Al2O3 triangular diagram, by two lines which join the figurative point of dicalcium silicate with that of pentacalcium trialuminate on the one hand, and with that of a composition containing 39.8 per cent CaO and 60.2 per cent Al2O3 on the other. Iron oxides, fluorspar, alkali salts, magnesia, feldspar, &c. which reduce the fusion temperature, may be added to the slag. Sulphides, carbon, iron, &c. burning in or on the surface of the slag may also be added. The slag may be homogenized by injecting air or gas, by oscillating the furnace, or by agitation resulting from magnetic action in an electric furnace. The residue from the extraction of alumina is suitable for the manufacture of cements. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 discloses a CaO content of the slag of 48-70 per cent, and refers also to sulphur, aluminium and silicium (sic) as additions burning in or on the surface of the slag. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:Lime, and when necessary, alumina-bearing ores; e.g. bauxite, are added to a blast furnace charge, so that the slag, preferably after slow cooling, has a composition within the limits (a) x(SiO2 2CaO)+y(Al2O3 1 to 2CaO), and (b) Al2O3=12-37 per cent, SiO2 =12-28 per cent, CaO=49.5-62 per cent, the alumina being thereupon extracted.
