Abstract

Titaniferous ores containing oxides of titanium and iron are mixed with carbonaceous material and the mixture is subjected to prolonged heating within the temperature range 400-1300 DEG C., e.g. for 3-5 hours, then to heating within the range 1800-2500 DEG C., e.g. for 10-45 minutes, and finally to heating within the range 1300-1800 DEG C., e.g. for 1/2 -2 hours, to cause separation of molten iron from a slag enriched in titanium. The operation may be performed in a low shaft furnace blown with an oxygen-enriched air or in a rotary kiln. Fluxes such as lime, silica magnesia or alumina or alkali metal hydroxides, carbonates, silicates or other salts may be added. The amount of carbonaceous material may be sufficient only to reduce the iron oxides, or to reduce the iron oxides and partially to reduce the titanium oxides or to reduce both oxides and form titanium carbide. The slag may be separated in solid, liquid, or pasty form.
