Abstract

Titaniferous iron ores, such as would yield a difficulty flowable slag if fluxed with lime alone, are fluxed with all or part of the lime replaced by sufficient alkali metal carbonate or bicarbonate to form a readily flowable slag at the operating temperature and an iron containing less than 0.2% of titanium. The quantity of said replacement, which may be sodium carbonate, may be stoichiometrically equal to the amount of lime replaced and may be sufficient to combine with any phosphorus, silicon, and sulphur and a major portion of the titanium present, the ore containing at least 5 parts by weight of titanium calculated as Ti02 and at least 6 parts by weight of phosphorus for each 40 parts by weight of iron. The sodium carbonate may be injected into a blast furnace at a point near the surface of the layer of molten slag which is readily flowable at 2,300 DEG F.
