Extracting; cast-iron processes. - Iron ore or oxide is heated with a carboniferous reducing- agent, a chloride, and slagging-material adapted to yield with the chloride a readily fusible slag that flows away and leaves the reduced iron unmelted and in a spongy state. For example, a charge, consisting of ore with about 5 per cent each of lime, silica, and sodium chloride, about 20 per cent of coal dust, and 10 per cent of water, may be heated in an open-hearth furnace to about 2500‹ F. for 4¢ hours, the heating-flame being preferably slightly oxidizing. A bloom of the resulting iron may be pressed to expel the remaining slag and then melted in a separate furnace with suitable additions for conversion into steel.
