Abstract
507,647. Refining iron and iron alloys. KRUPP GRUSONWERK AKT.-GES., F. Sept. 10, 1937, No. 24717. Void. Convention date, Oct. 20, 1936. [Classes 72 and 82 (i)] In a process for removing sulphur, arsenic and other injurious ingredients from iron and iron alloys, the lumps of metal &c. of small size are mixed with a finely granulated purifying agent and the whole melted in a rotary reverberatory Siemens-Marten or electric furnace. To prevent oxidation of the iron and, if desired, its carbonization, solid fuels such as coke or charcoal may be added to the furnace charge. Purifying agents such as calcium, manganese sodium carbonate and calcium carbide may be used. The sulphur-saturated slag may be revivifed for further use by a low-temperature oxidizing process. If a limestone slag rich in manganese is used, the manganese is partly or wholly converted into ferro-manganese which may be used again, together with limestone as purifying agent.
