Abstract

In the preparation of iron sponge, iron oxide, carbonaceous material and slaked lime are mixed, water is added and the whole thoroughly mixed and then formed into briquettes, the briquettes being then allowed to age without heating for a period of at least five days so as to ensure a slow and gradual evolution of the combined water from the briquettes during subsequent reduction effected at a temperature below the fusion point of the ore. The lime used is air-slaked and iron or steel turnings or drillings may be mixed with the ore &c. in a quantity not exceeding 10 per cent by weight of the oxide. The sulphur content of the ore is fixed as an alkaline sulphide which is separated from the iron sponge on melting of the latter.
