Abstract
Iron and iron alloys are disulphurized, at a temperature not exceeding 140 DEG C. in a molten condition by the addition of a solid granular desulphurizing agent taken from the group consisting of the alkaline earth oxides and magnesium oxide, the treatment taking place with vigorous stirring but no addition of extraneous heat, and in a non-oxidizing atmosphere. Small amounts of Al, Mg or calcium carbide added to the desulphurizing agent or small amounts of alkali compounds such as soda are stated to improve the efficiency of the reaction. Pulverized carbonaceous material added helps to prevent the agent sintering. The iron may be brought to the initial temperature by blowing in oxygen before the process is started. A rotary reaction chamber is described and illustrated. Specification 516,684 and U.S.A. Specification 2,258,850 are referred to.
