Abstract

In the production of an impure calcium aluminate by heating a lime-yielding ore with an aluminate or silica-aluminate material such as bauxite, clay, kaolin, shale and coal ashes, the ingredients are proportioned to provide 1-3 mols. CaO per mol. Al2O3. 0-1 mol. CaO per mol. SiO2, 0-2 mols. CaO per mol. TiO2 and 0 mols. CaO per mol. Fe2O3, and the mixture heated under such conditions that lime-iron oxide combinations are not formed, the temperature being maintained below that at which clinkering occurs. Within the limits, the lime content increases with increase of silica content, and of reaction temperature and time. The reaction temperature may vary from below 1000 DEG C. up to 1350 DEG C., depending on the composition of the reaction mass. The heating may take place with a reducing agent present or in a reducing atmosphere, especially in the higher temperature range. The products may be used as calcareous cements either as such or after separation of the iron, or for the extraction of alumina. Residues from the latter operation may be reused as raw material.ALSO:In the production of an impure calcium aluminate by heating a lime-yielding ore with an aluminate or silico-aluminate material such as bauxite, clay, kaolin, shale and coal ashes, the ingredients are proportioned to provide 1-3 mols.
