Abstract

High borosilicate glasses are melted and refined in container or machinery, the contact parts of which are composed of burnt refractories of high alumina content as such (more than 70 per cent) and low flux content (not more than 2 per cent of alkali oxides) and preferably also of low iron content (not more than 1 1/2 per cent of ferric oxide). A suitable refractory is made by burning a mixture of 85 parts of fused alumina, 8 parts of bond clay and 7 parts of kaolin, with or without the addition of phosphoric acid. Specification 316,129, [Class 22, Cements &c.] is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the melting &c. of high borosilicate glasses in contact with high alumina low flux refractories, in which the alumina content is mostly in the form of mullite, made by burning a mixture of 70 parts of mullite, 10 parts of fused alumina, and 20 parts of fire clay, with or without phosphoric acid. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
