Abstract
242,475. Kilby, J. N., and Spalton, A. H. May 6, 1924. Refining.-Steel, after it leaves the furnace, is poured into a container and refined therein by forming a complete envelope of refining medium comprising substances or a mixture or compositions of substances which are basic or neutral, said mixture &c. being applied as a lining to the container and also being added in powdered or molten form or both to the molten steel therein so as to form a complete envelope of the steel therein. The added composition may be of a different composition from the lining. In an example the lining consists of a mixture of 75 per cent of magnesite and 25 per cent of dolomite, and the added composition comprises one-third by weight of fluorspar, one-third of lime, one-sixth of silica and one-sixth of borax glass. According to one Provisional Specification, the purification may also be effected in a mould.
