Abstract

Refractory bodies and linings for metallurgical furnaces, are formed of compositions containing granular and fine material in which the granular material consists of at least 60 per cent of spinels or free magnesium oxide and the remainder of compounds of lower melting point such as silicates, titanates or alkaline earth aluminates, and the fine material below ,06 mm. grain size contains 1 to 15 per cent of the compounds of lower melting point and the remainder of highly refractory substances. The quantity of material below ,09 mm. grain size is preferably 5-35 per cent. If the fine material contains only small quantities of siliceous substances melting above 1700 DEG C., small quantities of boric acid, glyceroboric acid or magnesium or aluminium borates may be added. Chromium ores rich in spinels may be treated to yield the fine material, and, after comminution, may be purified by mechanical, chemical or electrostatic means. To obtain masses with small pore space, the fractions may be proportioned according to the Fuller curve, and the shaping may be effected under high pressure or with tamping or shaking machines.
