Abstract
324,312. Sprenger, A. July 17, 1928. Refractory substances.-A highly refractory substance is produced by fusing together the oxides of chromium, aluminium, silicon and magnesium, or minerals containing such oxides, in such proportions that the alumina may combine with silica or with silica and magnesia, and. the chromium oxide may combine with magnesia. to form simple double oxides. Preferably the last double oxide predominates in the product and uncombined chromium oxide or magnesia may be present. The melting of the mixture is performed in an electric furnace, and the heating and cooling are so conducted that the product contains 50 per cent or more of vitreous con. stituents. The melt mav be tempered during or after cooling. The slag derived from the process of producing ferro-chromium may be employed as a raw material, with additional chromium ore if necessary. The refractory substance may be cast or may be crushed and moulded with binding agents. Specification 302,087 is referred to.
