Abstract

A refractory body prepared by known ceramic methods, and containing a proportion of or consisting of titanium is subjected to heat treatment under non-oxidizing conditions preferably for a short time. This converts the electrically insulating refractory into a conducting body. Part only of the refractory may be thus treated to obtain a composite conductor-insulator. The treatment is preferably in a reducing atmosphere and at about 650 to 1000 DEG C. The titanium dioxide preferably forms at least 50 per cent, say between 90 and 97 per cent of the initial mix. The ceramic flux in the initial mix may be the oxides or compounds of the alkaline earth metals or of magnesium, lead oxide, clay, or soapstone. In examples: (1) 90 per cent titanium dioxide, 8 per cent soapstone and 2 per cent clay was formed into a ceramic body and fired as in making porcelain, the product being heated in coal gas at 1000 DEG C. for about 5 mins. and cooled in this atmosphere, (2) the initial mix comprises 97,5 per cent of commercial titanium dioxide (containing 2 per cent calcium phosphate) and 2,5 per cent ball clay, the subsequent treatment being as in (1). Specifications 450,630 and 467,190 are referred to.
