Abstract
Defects in chromite refractories are avoided by subjecting natural chrome ore to a preliminary heat treatment in the presence of magnesium hydroxide or a magnesium salt furnishing sufficient magnesium oxide to convert the low melting point gangue into forsterite, but insufficient to decompose the chromite spinel of the ore. This treatment is carried out below the melting point of the chromite spinel. Dead burned magnesium oxide may also be added to the mix before or after this heat treatment, and the mix is thereafter made up into suitable grain sizes, tempered, shaped and burned.
