Abstract

In making marking-elements, such as pencil leads, crayons, &c one or more ingredients such as clay and graphite or carbon black are deflocculated before or after the ingredients are combined. Clay may be suspended in water and treated with a small proportion of caustic soda; similarly graphite may be treated with magnesium oleate, tannin, or casein dissolved in sodium phosphate. The deflocculated clay and graphite are then mixed and the water removed by evaporation; or a flocculating-agent may be added and the water-removed by decantation or filtration; or the clay and graphite may be separately dewatered and then mixed. In some cases one or more of the ingredients may be ground with a deflocculating-agent.
