Paper, treating with special materials.-In a process for strengthening paper or similar material and rendering it impermeable and washable, the paper or the like is first treated with a solution containing two or more of the following substances :-salep gum tragacanth, alga gum, with or without the addition of alum, and resin. An optional treatment with one or more of the following :-borax, ammonium sulphate, ammonium carbonate, or boric acid, may follow, after which the impregnating substances are rendered insoluble by generally known processes. Colouring matters may be added to give particular desired effects such as irridescence, phosphorescence, marbling, and the like, and products similar to leather may be obtained. The paper or the like may be immersed in an alkaline reacting bath before the above treatment.
