Abstract

Wood pulp and articles made therefrom are bleached by treating them with thiourea dioxide. The treatment may be carried out in a bath containing 0.2-1% by weight of thiourea dioxide and approximately five times this quantity of zinc sulphate based on the weight of the dry wood substance in the pulp to be bleached. Optical bleaching agents and sequestering agents, e.g. polyphosphates and ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid, may also be added to the treating composition and the pH may be adjusted by the addition of sodium silicate. The treatment may be carried and in conjunction with a treatment to reduce the flammability of the material treated, with for example borates, e.g. Na2 B8 O13.4H2O, or phosphates.
