Abstract
2504. Mackay, H. Feb. 2. Impregnating - compositions. - Sole or other leather is hardened and waterproofed by treatment with an aqueous solution of Portland cement and borax, applied either during tanning or after its completion. The leather is softened in water, partly dried and coated on the grain side with boiled linseed oil, which is allowed to dry. It is then immersed in an aqueous bath of cement and borax in stated proportions, until thoroughly permeated; it is then dried and coated on both sides with oil. The treatment may be applied to shoe-soles without injury to the thread, pegs, or nails.
