Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, JAMES BENJAMIN Tour- KINS, it citizen of the United States, residing at Vanderwoort, in the county of Polk and State of Arkansas, have invented anew and useful Tanning Compound, of which the following is a specification, I
This invention relates to eonmounds for tanning hides, skins, pelts, and the like, and has for its object to provide a compound or liquid bath ada vted to receive the hides after the same has )een subjected to the usual I hating, and depilating process.
The invention consists of a compound or solution formed of the following ingredients in the proportionsstated, to wit: tanni'c acid or aoidum tnnnieum, one pound; azedaraeh, or the bark of the tree known as the Pride of China/7 one pound; gum-gambier, one
pound; alum, one-half pound, and oil of eedar, two ounces.
In carrying the 1nvention into effect the hides or pelts are first soaked in water until I soft and then placed in a hating-bath consisting of one gallon of water containing ap proximatelv three pounds of lime and two and one-half ounces of bicarbonate of S01 liurn.
The hides are allowed to remain in the hating-bath from three to fifteen hours, or until the hair becomes loose or slips, after which the hides are subjected to lho usual depilating process to remove the hair and subsequently placed in a bath of fresh water l'or approximately twenty hours, or until all lraee ol' the lime and sodium is eliminated.

Having thus deseribed the invention, what is claimed is---- 1. The herein-deseribei| eompound the same consisting ol tannie acid, azedaraeh, gum-gambler, alum and oil of cedar.
2. The herein-described compound the same consisting of tannio aeid one pound, a-zedarneh one pound, gum-gambier one pound, alum one-half pound and oil of cedar two oimces.
