BATING PROCESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 631,335, dated August 22, 1899.
' Application filed June 9, 1898. Serial No. 682,986- (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY SOHLEGEL, of Lapeer, in the county of Lapeer, State of Michigan, have inventeda new and Improved Bating Process, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to the treatment of hides, and has particular reference to the step known as hating, which has for its object the removal of the lime from the hides after they have been unhaired and preparatory to the application of the tanning liquor. Varifor this purpose; but bating has always been and still is a step requiring considerable care and skill. I
The object of my invention is to secure a simple bate which will be of an easy application and efficient in action.
To this end my invention consists in hating the hides with a solution of a chromium com pound.
I prefer to proceed as follows: I prepare a saturated solution of two ounces of bichromate of potash in water and pour the solution into a vat containing one thousand gallons of Water and stir the liquor thoroughly. The amount named is sufficient for the treatment of from twenty to forty hides. The liquor having been stirred as described, the unhaired hides are thrown into it and left therein for about twenty-four hours, being moved about occasionally, so as to secure a uniform action of the bate. The chromium compound will mix with the lime and by its action thereon will cause the lime to be more readily washed out, it being understood that the hides are washed or cleaned at the termination of the bating process, as usual, and then the hides are put in thetanning liquor.
I desire it to be understood that the gist of my invention lies in the employment of a chromium compound as a base. The chromium-compound solution therefore will form the base or main ingredient of the bate; but it is not essential that the hate should consist exclusively of such a solution.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent '1. The process of hating hides, which consists in treating them with a liquor consisting essentially of a solution of a chromium compound.
2. The process of bating hides, which consists in treating them with a liquor consisting essentially of a solution of bichromate of potash.
HENRY SOHLEGEL.
