Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HORACE M. MURRAY, OF SELIGMAN, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO I. W. DODGEN, OF OAK- GROVE, ARKANSAS.
TANNING COMPOUND.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 29, 1907.
Application filed January '7, 1905. Serial No. 240,0'79- Renewed MayBv 1907- Serial No. 371,661.
To all. whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HORACE M. MURRAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seligman, in the county of Barry and State of Missouri have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tanning Compounds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a novel compound for coloring and tanning skins and hide.
The compound comprises, essentially, terra japonica, fluid extract of cranes bill, alum and a coloring material, the latter for hides being preferably gum gambier. The proportions of the ingredients will vary according to the nature and age of the hide or skin and the length of time the same is to remain in the bath. The following proportions are given for approximately five gallons of water in the preparation of a bath for one to two year old cali hides:
NIH Lily- Fluid extract cranes bill 1 oz.
The ingredients are mixed and the hide after being limed, depilated and bated, is immersed in the solution the required time until thoroughly tanned. i For skins and small hides, the proportions will be less and for cow, ox and horse hides the proportions will be increased. For example, the skin of a yearling is adapted to be readily tanned in a comparatively Weak tan ning solution, whereas the hide of a bull requires a longer time and a tanning solution of greater strength. By varying the proportions of the ingredients to a given amount of Water. the strength of the solutionmay be regulated to suit the nature of the hide to be tanned.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A tanning solution consisting of water, gum gambier. terra japonica, alum, and crimes bill in about the proportions specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
