Description

UNITED STATES:
PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN VIOKERS AND HENRY HOLMES, on PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BA TING PROCESSES FOR HIDES AND SKINS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1463789, dated January 27, 1874; application filed July 12, 1673.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that We, JOHN VIcKERs and HENRY HOLMES, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented a Solution for Eating Skins, of which the following is a specification:
The object of our invention is an economical and effective solution for hating skins, consisting of a mixture of sulphuric acid with the lime liquor in which the skins have been already treated for removing the hair.
After the hair has been removed from the skins, in the usual manner, by treating the same with lime, we take the resulting lime liquor and dilute it with Warm water, and then add sulphuric acid until the liquor accords in strength with the character of the skins to be acted on, the ordinary proportions being about one part of sulphuric acid to four bucketfuls of the diluted lime liquor.
This solution is used for batin g the skins in place of the usual solution of dog and pigeon manure, which, aside from its uncleanliness, 1118 a tendency to rot the skins, whereas the improved solution, in which the skins are pen mitted to remain from one to ten hours, breaks up the gristle, opens the pores, and loosens the animal matter from the skins, so that it can be readily worked out, and at the same time toughens the said skins, and renders them easier to tan and firmer after being tanned. We claim as our invention-- The within-described solution for hating skins, consisting of a mixture of sulphuric acid with the lime liquor in which the skins have been already treated for removing the hair.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN VIGKERS. HENRY HOLMES.
