Abstract

10,667. Spigno, G. B. M. May 5. Processes and materials for treating hides and skins.-Leather that has been tanned by a non- fatty vegetable process is treated with solutions of glue or gelatine, free from lime and iron, whereby the free tannin in the hide is fixed and decolorizing is effected without the employment of acids or salts. The hides are dried prior to the glue treatment, without being rinsed free from the tanning-solution. The glue or gelatine bath may be of animal or vegetable origin, and may be applied to the hides between successive dippings in the ordinary tanning-bath. Fleshings, shavings, or other gelatinous substances may be acted on by hot water in the bath in substitution for ready-made glue &c. The application to sole leather is instanced by treatment with a mixture of baryta white and a glue solution containing barium chloride, sodium borate, whale oil, and glucose in stated proportions. According to the Provisional Specification, the hides may sometimes be rinsed and pressed before being treated with the glue, or they may be rinsed with formaldehyde or other substances that will fix the gelatinous material; also it is stated that ordinary glue may be employed, and that the treatment is applicable to mineraltanned hides.
