Abstract
Sea water and similar solutions, advantageously after treatment with lime for the precipitation of magnesium hydroxide, are treated with baryta for the recovery of their sulphur content as barium sulphate. If the magnesium is not first removed, the hydroxide precipitates with the barium sulphate; the mixed precipitate is calcined for the removal of the sulphur, the soluble baryta thereupon being separated from the magnesia for re-use. Precipitation of the magnesia and barium sulphate is preferably effected in the presence of previously obtained precipitates. Specification 23642/02, [Class 1], is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the treatment of the sea water &c., with barium carbonate, if desired, with injection of carbon dioxide, whereby a barium sulphate-calcium carbonate precipitate is obtained. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
