Abstract
In the production of lithium carbonate by precipitation from a saturated aqueous solution containing potassium and lithium sulphes, at potassium hydroxide is added to the solution in a molar proportion equivalent to the lithium sulphate present whereby potassium sulphate is precipitated and lithium hydroxide is dissolved as it is formed; the precipitated potassium sulphate is removed by filtration and gaseous carbon dioxide is passed in to precipitate the lithium as carbonate which is filtered and recovered. The initial solution is preferably treated with potassium hydroxide at room temperature and allowed to stand for a few hours before filtration and the carbonating with gaseous carbon dioxide is then preferably effected in a pressure vessel. The saturated aqueous sulphate starting solution may be obtained from micaceous silicate minerals known as zinnwaldite.
