Abstract

Method for the production of beryllium sulphate from beryl by decomposition with soda, in which, after treatment of the melt with sulphuric acid and separation of silicon dioxide by known methods, the sulphate solution resulting from further treatment with sulphuric acid, is concentrated and the pH adjusted to 8.5-9, when beryllium and aluminium are precipitated as hydroxides. Sodium sulphate is removed from the precipitated mass by an upward flow of water at 80-90 DEG C., sulphuric acid is added and aluminium is removed as alum by the addition of potassium or ammonium sulphate. The pH of the sulphate solution is adjusted by milk of lime or sodium hydroxide.
