Abstract
Alkali metal acetates are converted into the corresponding bicarbonates by the action of carbonic anhydride upon a concentrated aqueous solution of the acetate in the presence of acetone at a temperature not exceeding 10 DEG C. When employing sodium acetate it is preferable to have some potassium acetate also present. After the separation of the precipitated solid alkali bicarbonate, the acid alkali acetate simultaneously formed can be heated to liberate acetic acid. Alternatively, the acid alkali acetate solution may be neutralized with lead hydroxide to produce lead acetate which is treated with alkali chloride to precipitate lead chloride and reconstitute the initial alkali acetate solution. The precipitation of the lead chloride may be assisted by the addition of the acetone necessary for the main reaction. The alkali chloride should be added in solid form and if only solutions thereof are available, the necessary solid salt may be precipitated therefrom, by the addition of acetone which can then be recovered by distillation and used in the main reaction. The lead chloride solution may be treated with ammonia to reform the lead hydroxide and the resulting concentrated solution of ammonium chloride may be treated with lime to re-form the ammonia. An example is given.ALSO:Alkali metal acetates are converted into the corresponding bicarbonates by the action of carbonic anhydride upon a concentrated aqueous solution of the acetate in the presence of acetone at a temperature not exceeding 10 DEG C., the acid alkali acetate simultaneously formed being heated to liberate acetic acid after the separation of the precipitated solid bicarbonate.
