Abstract
Alkaline earth metal salts of gold keratinates are prepared by treating the reaction products of gold salts and reduced or unreduced keratin hydrolysates with oxides, hydroxides or carbonates of alkaline earth metals. The products, which are water-soluble, possess therapeutic properties. The hydrolysis of the keratins may be effected with acids or alkalies and the reduction, if any, may take place simultaneously with or subsequently to the hydrolysis. Keratin degradation products p produced by enzymatic methods may also be employed. According to the examples: (1) hair is hydrolyzed with dilute hydrochloric acid and after neutralization with ammonia, auric chloride solution is added, the solution then made alkaline with caustic soda and poured into alcohol; an aqueous solution of the precipitated sodium gold keratinate is acidified, the filtered product suspended in water and shaken with a suspension of calcium hydroxide, filtered and poured into alcohol, whereupon the calcium salt separates out; (2) in the same manner as in (1), hair, horn or wool is hydrolyzed and from the sodium gold keratinate obtained the free acid is prepared; on shaking an aqueous suspension of the acid with strontium hydroxide or magnesium oxide in suspension and pouring the filtered solution into alcohol, the strontium magnesium salt respectively is precipitated; (3) horn is heated with dilute hydrochloric acid, tin added in portions and after neutralization with ammonia, hydrogen sulphide is passed in; to the filtrate auric chloride solution is added and after neutralization with caustic soda is poured into alcohol to precipitate the sodium gold keratinate; an aqueous solution of the latter is treated with hydrochloric acid, shaken with a suspension of magnesium carbonate and the filtered solution poured into alcohol, whereby the magnesium salt is precipitated. Specification 479,358 is referred to. Samples have been furnished under Sect. 2 (5) of calcium gold keratinates prepared by (1) following the procedure of (3) up to the addition of auric chloride solution and then rendering the solution alkaline by addition of a suspension of calcium hydroxide and pouring the filtrate into alcohol; (2) shaking the acidified solution of a sodium gold keratinate obtained in the process of (3) with a suspension of calcium carbonate and pouring the filtered solution into alcohol.
