Abstract

Solutions of iron-copper protein compounds such as iron nucleinate or peptonate and and copper nucleinate or caseinate are stabilized by the addition of water-soluble fruit acid salts such as sodium citrate. Copper nucleinate is prepared from yeast by treatment with dilute sodium hydroxide, partial neutralization with hydrochloric acid followed by acidification with acetic acid. The solid matter is allowed to settle and the liquid filtered, copper sulphate is added and stirred till dissolved and the flocculent precipitate allowed to settle, filtered and washed till free from sulphates. The precipitate is then washed with alcohol and ether and dried. In preparing iron nucleinate from yeast a similar procedure is followed, ferric chloride being the source of iron, while the precipitation is effected in 60 per cent alcohol. A copper nucleinate is obtained from nucleic acid by a similar process in which the percentage of copper is considerably less than that in that obtained from yeast. Copper caseinate is obtained by the addition of a solution of copper sulphate to a solution of casein in dilute sodium hydroxide, filtration and washing with alcohol and ether. Alcohol, glycerine, sugar and flavouring substances (oil of orange, ethyl acetate, vanillin) are added to the mixture for therapeutic use.ALSO:Solutions of iron-copper protein compounds such as iron nucleinate or peptonate and copper nucleinate or caseinate are stabilized by the addition of water soluble fruit acid salts such as sodium citrate. Alcohol, glycerine, sugar and flavouring substances (oil of orange, ethyl acetate, vanillin) are also added. The Specification describes methods of preparing the metal protein compounds which are employed in such proportions that the mixture contains about twice as much iron as copper.
