Abstract

In a process for the production of tungstic oxide by fusion of tungsten ore with alkali followed by the solution of the product in water at a maximum concentration of 0.5 gr. mol. of alkali tungstate per litre, precipitation of tungstic acid by the addition of hydrochloric acid, and separation of the tungstic acid which is redissolved in ammonia at the same concentration preparatory to a second precipitation by hydrochloric acid, the tungstate solution before each of the precipitations contains an excess of at least 8 mols. (preferably 15 to 25 mols.) per mol. of tungstate, of an ionized alkali metal or ammonium compound. The excess of ionized compound in the first precipitation may be formed by using an excess of alkali, e.g., 10 to 30 times the amount stoichiometrically necessary of sodium carbonate, in the fusion of the ore, which forms sodium chloride on addition of the hydrochloric acid. For the second precipitation, the ionized compound is formed by dissolving the precipitated tungstic acid in excess of 25 per cent. ammonia which gives ammonium chloride on addition of hydrochloric acid. After the final precipitation, the tungstic acid is filtered off, washed with 20 to 40 per cent. ammonium nitrate, and calcined at 800 to 1000 DEG C.
